Sounds of Buenos Aires: New Tango for Orchestra

*** Pablo Ziegler nominated for two 2013 Latin Grammy Awards ***

"sumptuously orchestrated... stirring beauty... one needn't be a tango aficionado to appreciate what Ziegler does here... 4½ out of 5 stars"
— Joe Tangari, DownBeat

"a programmatic portrait of the chaos of life in a city like Buenos Aires. It takes what Piazzolla began and pushes it to new heights"
— Jack Goodstein, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"like an imagined collaboration between Ziegler, Piazzolla, Igor Stravinsky, Bernard Herrmann, and Leonard Bernstein... [Ziegler] brings a sense of passion and surprise to every one of his solos"
— Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

For decades, Buenos Aires-born Latin GRAMMY-winning pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler has been one of the leading creators of Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic Tango and American Jazz. With "Sounds of Buenos Aires," Ziegler takes this rich music to another stage with a riveting new program for orchestra featuring orchestral arrangements by Amsterdam's Metropole Orkest based on Ziegler's original arrangements for quartet.

The program debuted at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam in 2009 with the Metropole Orkest, producing a live recording: Amsterdam Meets New Tango released on Zoho in 2013. Producer Gustavo Pazos Conde writes: "This is the Buenos Aires of the 21st century: bewildering, extreme, mysterious, sensual, dark, threatening and violent. [Ziegler's] music reflects this urban idiosyncrasy and the different moods of its people; from the joy of dancing to the anxieties about life in today's Argentina."

Using traditional Argentine dance rhythms including milongas, murgas and malambos, Ziegler distills the majestic flair and gritty urban swagger of a tango dance hall, bringing to the concert stage the sophisticated charm and elegant swing of a great dance partner.
